What kind of hive would be best to get bees out of a house.
« on: January 22, 2013, 10:50:30 AM »
This is going to be my first colony and I don't know how to get bees out of a wall permanently, without tearing the house up,my question is what hive would be best and I have a feeling that this is going to be a big colony.
Also I would like advice on getting the bees out without hurting the house.  ???

Philip...Welcome to the forum.  The following links will give you some great videos on bee hive removals.  After watching some of these, you should have a good idea of what to expect, the equipment you may need and how to go about moving them to their new home.

You could try doing a “trap out” rather than a “cut out” but if the colony has been there for any length of time, most likely there’s a lot of comb/honey inside the wall.  Unless you remove it and seal every possible entrance in the area, it’s likely another swarm will show up in the future.   Not to mention the other problems with leaving that inside the wall.  Watch some of the videos above and get an idea of what you’re in for and then go from there.

Please post some photos/video.  I’d love to see it.

Philip you will need to get the honey out of the wall anyway.
One of these may help get the bees out

You probably have to do an opening in order to retrieve the frames, you can place the comb into a frame tied up with string or elastic band and place in a hive. For the rest of the bees you could rent or borrow from bee club a bee vacuum this way you have comb and bees hope you have a queen with it.

Phil? .........Phil?........

Hmmmm...... I have a feeling, that Phil's bees are still where they were. Just like mine.
I was all fired up, this spring. I had a friend, that had an old house, with bees in between the upstairs floor, and the downstairs, living room. I spent most of the summer, plugging this hole and that hole, only to have those dastardly little dickens, make me into a space-suited, hardware cloth waving, raving lunatic. Now, it is too late, to liberate them from the old house. My friend has been supportive. He isn't in a huge hurry to get them out. So, in the immortal words of General McArthur, "I will be return". Yes Phil, I will return in the spring. Armed with my homemade vacuum. O.K. McArthur didn't have a vacuum, or did he?
  I'll vindicate you Phil!
